I've heard about people on Mellaril. I understood this was a drug used in Schizophrenia, and like all antipsychotics (I think), pretty powerful. So is it being used in depression as well, and is this depression with psychotic features, or major depression, or some other diagnosis? Just curious, and hoping those on Mellaril were put on it by competent shrinks.

My diagnosis is major depression which is also associated with high states of anxiety. I have been on Mellaril (prescribed by my psychiatrist) for over a year. I also suffer from post traumatic stress disorder from finding my 13 year old son hanging from a rope (dead) in our backyard. The Mellaril took away many of my PTSD symptoms and has helped me to cope more reasonably with my son's death. Mellaril is generally prescribed as an anti-anxiety measure. It's not particularly powerful but it is non-addictive and so tends to get used in a great many cases. I was on it myself for anxiety problems (100mg when needed), I found it sedated my body but not my mind, even the doctors agreed that it wasnt particularly great, but it was the best they could offer. I know it's an old-timer - been around since the Sixties. In the same family of "tranquilizers" as Thorozine. I took it for a while in those days, and was definitely not skitzy, but was severely depressed. I was having trouble gripping reality though after eating peyote several times. As I remember, it didn't help much, just made me me feel sort of empty inside, and I thought I would rather feel the pain and at least feel alive, and I eventually stopped it.
