Question:
I am on prozac and desipramine. I dont know if its my imagination, but I seem to be losing hair more than usual, both on my head and elsewhere. Is this possible? I dont have much hair to begin with.

Answer:
Hair loss can be a symptom of thyroid disorders. Many of the symptoms of a hypothyroid condition are similar to symptoms of depression. If you haven't had your thyroid checked via a blood test recently, it might be time to talk to your internist. All the SSRIs can cause hair loss--so can nefazadone and bupropion. I read that doctors often perscribe certain vitamins for users of depakote and similar meds, who sometimes experience hair loss. I noticed increased hair loss after about 3 months of Prozac, so I decided to give the supplements a try. Interestingly, I think it's worked. I've taken selenium, zinc, and vitamin B complex every day for nearly three months, and it seems to have reduced hair loss from 40 or 50 hairs/day to 10-15. (Since still I have a relatively full head of hair, my wife makes fun of me for even bothering to count!) Not sure how it works or whether it will work in your case, but you may consider it, or switch to different meds. Oh, I also started minoxidil, but didn't give it the requisite four months -- my scalp was much too irritated, so I discontinued the stuff after about 6 weeks!
