About 3 years ago I came off of a 4-year run with Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine sulfate) for ADHD etc. Concurrent with what some feel about this drug, is that in large enough doses over a reasonable period of time, Dopaminergic neurons can be permanently(?) damaged. Also, one tends to lack the 'color' that life once had when coming off of Dexedrine. I also concur.

This is the case, or seems to be, with ALL a.d's, and any drug that affects neurotransmitter synapses. There was a speech given a few week's ago at McMaster Hospital, here in Hamilton Ont, Canada, by a couple of researchers who have found that, over time, Ritalin actually DOWN REGULATES (i.e.. lowers productions and number of synaptic receptors) of Serotonin, norepinephrine, and Dopamine. That means, over time, the body produces less of these chemicals, and maybe even permanently destroys the number of receptor sites these chemicals land on. The researchers even mentioned the possibility that anti-depressant drugs may have the same effect. For what it's worth, Parnate (tranylcypromine) is cyclopropyl-amphetamine, meaning it is extremely close in chemical structure to Dexedrine. Of course, although it shares some of Dexedrine's activating properties, its principal action is different. Dexedrine does not inhibit MAO. All MAOIs can cause weight gain and low blood pressure, and can cause potentially fatal high blood pressure if combined with certain foods, which must be avoided while on such drugs.
