Question:
I am frustrated, depressed, agitated and the like and I feel like SHIT! My doctor refused to prescribe Parnate to me. He says my liver tests were abnormal. Come on, now.... My SGOT levels were slightly elevated.... even the technician who took my blood agreed with me that heavy lifting (which I do at the gym) breaks down spinal muscle tissue and can lead to elevated SGOT levels.... not indicative of liver damage, but my doctor would not budge. But what is the deal here? What is the deal with Nardil and Parnate that does not exist for all the other anti-depressants? Why such an emphasis on hepatic function?

Answer:
Cause you dont want to function without one? MAOs are nothing to fool with..they can cause all sorts of adverse reactions that the new AD cant even touch!!! I was on Nardil for around 5 mos and had nothing but problems! Had to watch everything I ate..*you know, the reaction with cheese, nuts, figs, etc...and STILL managed to gain 50 lbs, felt miserable all the time..(like I had a cold) and couldnt seem to really wake up..one of THE worst times with meds I have had yet!! Generally, MAOIs are now reserved as a 'last resort' if all other antidepressants don't work. They worked wonderfully for me and still do, after I spent several years taking tricyclics that made me cretinous, and SSRIs that made me aggressive. MAOIs still have their role - besides their availability to people like me who didn't have any success with other antidepressants, they work particularly well on anxiety-based, 'atypical' depressions.
