I've had problems with my weight ever since I started taking anti-depressants since 1985. At my last psy. visit I addressed this issue and my doctor said, "Well, your lopressor can cause weight gain, as well as the Remeron, Wellbutron, Buspar, Zyprexa, and Ativan." So I've had to choose between emotional/physical stability and being over weight. Not a happy choice for me, but my family sure does appreciate my stability. Very frustrating and embarrassing for me. Get rid of one set of problems and take on a whole host of other problems.
Answer:
Add Prozac to the list. Actually, Wellbutrin has restored a semblance of self-control for me. That's not to say the pounds are melting away though ... . Prozac "tricks" me into being happy by actually being apathetic. I don't mind the trick but I don't like some of the side effects. I have been on anti-depressants since 1992 and gained 80 pounds. Started with Zoloft, then went to Prozac, then to Effexor, then to Zoloft and Wellbutrin. It's been a whirlwind of relief and side effects. I finally started doing some research via the Internet and discovered more than one theory that seratonin and dopamine were the major neurotransmitters which controlled many other aspects of your life beside depression and weight gain. Most of the SSRI's addressed the Seratonin side via "Selective Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitors" and left the dopamine side to fend for it's self with exception of Wellbutrin which addresses both. The theorys I had seen lead one to believe that the balance of Seratonin and Dopamine was important as they tended to behave inversely proportionate to one another in the brain.....i.e. high Seratonin would initially result in low dopamine but would have a "backlash" effect of high dopamine. This osilliation between the two was quite natural in a healthy brain system and tended to equalize their existance. In a brain with a chemical imbalance, no matter who or what caused this imbalance, the system no longer functioned properly, or did not recover to the balanced state.
