Has anybody tried St. John's Wort? Is it actually effective? My wife uses Paxil and would like an alternative, but we don't want to stop something that works for something that doesn't.

Seems like each of the a/d meds work for some and not at all for others. If there is a side effect(s) that your wife does not like with Paxil (Which I assume because she is looking for an alternative) then she may find something that will work better for her. Unfortuantely, as my doctor told me (and I am inclined to believe this based on my own experience) finding the right med for someone is just throwing darts at a dartboard until you find one that works for you and does not have side effects that leave you with a choice of intrusively unpleasant side effects or depression. I think that efflexor is going to work very well for me, Paxil didn't at all. But each med affects the chemical balances differently and it is a totally individual treatment for anyone. What works great for someone else may have nothing but unpleasant side effects if anything at all for me and vice-versa. I have severe depression. My personal advice is if Paxil works to control your wife's depression, STAY WITH IT! I had a medication that worked for me for 2 years and I made a tragic mistake to go off of it. Now it wont work and I cant find anything that will! I think you can take St. John's Wart with your Paxil, but be sure and check with your doc. What about taking the 5htp with the St. John's Wort? The SJW makes me more even emotionally but I am still lethargic and non-motivated. If I decide to take this should I stop the SJW?
