My wife has shown decent success using Paxil, but we were wondering what side effects or long term problems (if any) using Paxil can cause. She seems to be more "ditzy" on Paxil, she can't remember things like her "times tables", etc. Paxil saved our marriage and her relationship with our three children, but the side effects really bother her. Any input at all will be greatly appreciated.

Since I've been on anti-depressants for almost 10 years, and I have changed meds more than a few times, I thought I might throw this out there. This past February, I was talking to my psychiatrist because my mood had begun to seriously decline, and I didn't want to go through the hell of Wellbutrin withdrawal (getting used to it was bad enough, though it has worked pretty well for the most part, with few side effects once you are used to it). So he said we could just add another drug that I'd been on before, under his care, and responded positively to: Effexor. While we were discussing it (he's a very cool psychiatrist -- I can ask him anything and he always gives me a thorough answer or telling me he doesn't know but can find out), I asked him if it was possible to develop a tolerance to anti-depressant pharmaceuticals in the same way that one can develop a tolerance for alcohol or marijuana. He smiled and said, "There's no data to support that... but you're far from the only patient of mine to have asked me that, and I think it is definitely possible." He went on to say that most of the studies on the efficacy of various antidepressants do not follow the patients for more than 20-24 weeks at the most. To his knowledge, there were no longitudinal studies that followed people diagnosed clinically depressed and medicated with AD for years or even decades.
