Question: I want to get out of this sh... I've been on Prozac since Xmas 1994. I think I've been depresed since 1986 when I started considering suicide.. So I went on with these gloomy ideas until september 1994 when suddenly everything went wrong.
Answer: If you've been on prozac all this while and the depression isn't lifting, I wonder if your pdoc couldn't rty something else? I mean, it doesn't sound like the AD is doing much and there's lots of other ones. It's a dilemna I'm currently faced with as well. Also, combining alcohol ( a depressant) with ADs is probably not the best idea. Ya gotta give the drug a chance to work and not have to fight some other chemical you're putting in there, y'know? I am sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time. I agree with cris. Come on and join us! Try to talk to your P/doc about changing your meds to something else. Please understand that it is not a good idea to drink and to take the meds at the same time because that is a disaster waiting to happen. I am on Zoloft and would have an occasional drink now and then. BAD MOVE! It made me sicker than a dog. Also, when taking these meds, you have to give them a chance to work. I am sorry that it seems that I'm being repeticious, but we can't emphasize enough how important it is to take your meds, and let them work to thier full potential. I hope that you can get the help that you need. If you want to write back, go ahead, I'm always here. I am only a few weeks old to this website, recently diagnosed Bipolar. you wouldnt believe the responce I have gotten in email support. it is fantastic to know that so many people are williing to take the time to reply. the info/feedback/encouragement has been GREAT and its the BEST support I could be getting right now. stick with the website, and try out #depression on IRC. the net is such a good resource for people like us. Haven't been on prozac but I have been on zoloft and paxil.. like everone else has said take the meds and take them religiously. I have been hospitalized twice and in one of the groups I attended they explained that combining alcohol and the med almost completely counteracts the effects of the medicine. If at all possible stay away from alcohol as it can cause the depression to be worse than it was before. Hang in there,,, there are a lot of us out here and with the support we can get we will make it.... HUGS
