Depression - BUSPAR QUESTION

Question:
I know you guys have probably answered these questions like a million times... But anyway.. I am currently on 50mg's of paxil and I take xanax whenever I need it.. My neurologist gave me the Xanax.... Now, My psychiatrist found out about me taking xanax and she got mad... She put me on the paxil , buspar combination.. And wants me to stop with the xanax..Could you guys please e-mail me and tell me how buspar acts like with paxil?? And will I have withdrwl symptoms from xanax , since I'm startin buspar?? How does buspar work?? Will it help my panic?

Answer:
If you have chronic anxiety then Xanax is far superior to Buspar. I would make sure that your neurologist is planning on maintaining you on Xanax and dump your psychiatrist. You will have withdraw from Xanax. I took 4mg a day for six months and had a two week withdraw with increased anxiety and other minor things. It was worth it though. Xanax has a known antidepressant effect as well. Your psychiatrist believes that she knows thing that other types of people cannot figure out. The truth is that she has to deal with a limited number of medications and really is not privelidged to anything you cannot figure out yourself. Read up on Xanax vs. Buspar and decide yourself which is a better antianxiety med. Buspar didn't work for me. I took it for the minimum of 4 weeks. My current Dr. doesn't like the Buspar 'class' of drugs. He put me on lorazepam, 1mg 3x a day as needed. This worked fine for a while, then seemed to have no effect. Now I take clorazepate, 7.5 mg 2x a day as needed. Buspar must be taken daily, every day. The Benzodiazepines class of drugs can be taken as needed, but all are habit forming but not to the point of dangerous consequences. I would try to stay with xanax or another benzodiazepine type drug. I also take 150mg of zoloft daily with my anti anxiety medication. Is Buspar actually a real drug? I've never met anyone who said it worked. I had a huge fight with my pdoc because when I took it, I was totally convinced that it was a placebo. I was insulted. Xanax works great. I am afraid of the addictive potential, so I don't take it three times a day as suggested. I take it when I know I need it. Sometimes three times a day, sometimes once a week.
