Birth Control - SSRI And Birth Control Pills .. ?

Question:
I was wondering, has any one heard or know a reason why this two drugs shouldnt be taken together... i'm asking since in my birth control pills package it is written that if you take Anti depressants or calming drugs you shoyudl consult the doctor since it is risky (i'm not sure if they mean that the pills are less effective or it is simply not good for you)

Answer:
I think in general it is a good idea to make sure your doctor is fully aware of all medications you are taking, even herbal ones. Most medications have a warning that suggests advising your doctor when taking other meds. I would discuss this with your doc, but "antidepressants" actually covers a wide range of different medications. I would think SSRIs would be pretty benign. personally, i went on the pill in early september to regulate my periods. it made me really depressed ( i have a history of major depression and dsythemia) ... one of the side effects can be depression. one of my docs told me vitamin b6 could alleviate it, but i didn't find this to be the case. i am almost certain the depressive episode was caused by the pill. in general, if you have a history of depression, i would strongly suggest another form of contraception. its not worth a trip to the pit. you can try low estrogen forms or progesterone only forms of the pill, but monitor yourself carefully!

Discuss It!
