I know this has probably gotten a lot of discussion already. Maybe not, and I really am the only one in the world who has gained around 70 pounds since I started taking Paxil, Prozac, Depakote, lithium, on and off, etc., etc. Doctors sure don't want to cop to it, do they? I get a lot of "eat right and exercise more" lectures.

Very timely post for me. I was just at the dr. today for the "annual". She is very concerned about my 100-lb. weight gain in 2 yrs., since I began taking Zoloft. She wants me to see an internist to rule out any medical reason, so I will do this. I mentioned that I had seen website posts from people who have gained weight on anti-depressants. She kind-of, sort-of, acknowledged that this could be possible, but it would be a very minute and rare possibility. You're right, the drs are in denial. Since starting on various psychotropic medications I've gained 120 lbs! My psychiatrist doesn't seem concerned with my weight, just my mood. When I inquired into what was causing such huge weight gains, he told me that ALL of my medications caused weight gain: Remeron, Zyprexa, etc. I've been arguing with my pdoc over the 15 pounds I gained in 3 months on Zoloft. Her response is that I could "use" the extra weight. Well, it's my body, I'm small boned and slender to begin with, but now my clothes don't fit anymore, I'm not comfortable with the changes, and I'm not here to suit anyone else's definition of what I should look like! She, too, is trying to tell me I should see an internist to rule out medical reasons, etc. but I've been the same weight and clothing size for all of my adult life -- strange coincidence that the increase would occur right when I started the medication. She also tried to tell me weight gain was a rare and unusual side effect of Zoloft -- that there must be other forces at work when I know there are not -- and again, that's not what I've read here!
