Question:
Does anyone know what to expect when discontinuing Zoloft? Is it typical to feel overwhelmed and sad for a few days everytime the dosage is cut in half? How long will it last? My doctor is only available once a week and has a history of not returning phone calls.

Answer:
I've been completely off Zoloft now for around 3 weeks having cut down kind of like you described. In physical terms I've felt a little light headed at times but nothing else much that I've noticed. In mental terms, it's hard to tell. I think I maybe feel a bit down now and again - certainly more irritable, bad tempered, impatient. But I haven't any of the major symptoms as yet such as sleep disturbance, wanting to burst into tears and that terrible, terrible feeling in the pit of your stomach at 3.26am. So far so good. I hope I'll become less irritable though - I'm pissing off my co-workers I think! I was first prescribed 50 mg Zoloft about 2 years ago. It has worked well for me, other than a 100-lb weight gain, a sense of lethargy, and the inability to cry. I have tried to get off of it twice, each time very, very slowly, over a period of 4-6 weeks. I felt just fine, didn't notice any difference, until about 2 1/2 months later. Then the dark, sad periods and the tears began again. So, after the 1st time I quit, I got back on Zoloft again. The second time I quit was this summer, and this week I told the dr. that I felt like I needed to be back on it. This time she wants me to try Celexa, so I have been on this for a few days. So far, so good. Of course, everyone's experience may be very different.
