My elderly dad who had anxiety and agitation had been prescribed Risperdal, became more agitated with less sleep on that, and has recently been switched to Tegretol, on which he is extremely agitated and anxious constantly until he finally passes out from overexertion.
Answer:
I had to take Tegretol for a condition unrelated to my depression (trigeminal neuralgia). During that time I was already taking 100mg/day of Zoloft and 30 mg/day of Remeron. For the first week to ten days I felt very anxious and felt I had a million things to do and needed to get them done within the hour, also it made me feel dizzy and kind of "loopey" or "dopey", which is very strange if you can imagine both feelings at the same time (anxious and dopey). It was like I needed to do all of these things but I couldn't concentrate on anything for more than a minute or two. My solution was to take Xanax to quell the anxiety, so then I was "sleepy" and "dopey" - two of the seven dwarfs as I recall. The doctor doubled my dose of Tegretol as the initial dose wasn't enough to take away the pain I was having. I didn't notice any increased side effects from the increased dose. The doctor told me that my initial reaction to Tegretol was normal and I'd get over it, which I did. However, the addition of Tegretol to my other meds effected the way they worked (the anti-depressants). Once I got off the Tegretol, I became severely depressed again and tried several different anti-depressants and combinations until I found one that works (Celexa). I don't know if this helps you at all. Though I know that these medications I'm taking sometimes have effects on me that I can't control, even if I wanted too, I know that I am better off taking them than not. I wish you the best and you and your father are in my thoughts.
