Answer:
The memory loss was considerable. Other aspects were affected such as my abilitly to go up and down stairs (I couldn't..kept tripping). This led me to believe that there was a lot more damage done to the brain than simple memory loss. My severe depression was only briefly relieved. I was in an car accident and my car wrecked. The stress of the accident (the other driver had no insurance and took off) and being without transportation or having the money to get my car fixed threw me over the cliff again and my severe depression returned. Various forms of Stress can make mental illness significantly worse very quickly. The following year I was in and out of psych hospitals 6 times while also participating in an outpatient program from 9am to 3pm daily. I changed doctors when I was told I was going to have to undergo ECT again for my depression because they couldn't control it with medication. I found a doctor in the yellow pages who specialized in the biochemical aspects of mental illness plus had the ability to do ECT if it was REALLY necessary. The psychiatrist started me on one medication one at a time until I was up to Remeron, Wellbutrin, Buspar, Ativan, Zyprexa. It was an incredibly difficult year but well worth the effort when I stablized on the medications. I had sucessfully avoided the ECT again. My personal experience with ECT: I had 20 back in 73. They caused me no discomfort, no disability, and no memory loss, except for a few events during the time of the treatments. I would not hesitate to undergo such treatment again if a physician I trusted suggested it. I think (must check) that there is something on ECT at Depression Central, which you maywih to read. I'm no expert, but let me assure you that asociations to Hollywood horrors and electric chairs are off the mark.
