The consultant has diagnosed 'Recurrent depressive illness' and proposed going putting me on lithium permanently, in addition to the Dothiepin [full permitted dose] being used to treat the current bout.

Taking Lithium was a negative had a negative effect on my body. Sure it kept the manic episodes to a minimum but I had uncontrolable hand tremors. I have just recently been taken off of the Lithium, and I feel better physically. Now I am manic all of the time though. I also take Zoloft, Depekote, and Risperidol. If anyone knows a compatible medication to take instead of the Lithium that doesen't cause any serious side effects I would appreciate it if you might respond.. I have been on lithium for about 4 months and for me it is the miracle drug. I was on 4 different medications and now I take the lithium and that is it. The zombie effect I had that at first but as I got used to the medication it is alot better now. I was first told that litium would not do anything for me but now I know that it was the best thing for me. Lithium is definitley NOT my drug of choice. It turned me into a PUFFBALL and I now weigh 130 lbs. more than I did before I started it 2 yrs. ago,without eating anything different in my diet. It was ridiculous. I hated that blahhh feeling, like I was completely non-creative and I was feeling heavily sedated most of the time, I vomited tons when I first began it, the first 6 wks or so, so it was like morning sickness...and I had terrible what I call "sodium cramps" and I got edema and swelling from it, my ring size use to be a size 7, now it's a 12. That's how bloated and puffed up the sodium in that damn stuff makes you. But then again, God Bless the manufacters of it, becuz I do know alot of people who it really helps and they couldn't bear life without there Lithium. I just had a bad chemistry with it. my body totally hated it. Along with that horrible metal taste in your mouth.
