Question:
Anyone ever done this? In Canada you can only get Wellbutrin in the SR 150's, so it is really hard to modify your dosage. My guess is that at worst the effects would just be "non SR". So half a 150 SR would be a regular 75.

Answer:
I can't comment on Wellbutrin specifically. It depends on how wellbutrin SR is dosed. If it's in individual drug "beads", there might be a brief spike and a slightly sustained effect (drug curve would be similar to normal Wellbutrin). If it's like extended-release DXM (i.e., polysterex), it's actually embedded in a plastic and release wouldn't be altered much. Still, I'd talk to a doctor. I've cut Wellbutrin SR tablets in half (not to mention quarters). The outer coating is primarily to protect the inside from air; bupropion apparently loses it's potency rapidly when exposed to oxygen. So you wouldn't want to cut tablets too far in advance of taking them. The SR property comes from mixing the bupropion in stuff that is dissolved slowly by the digestive system. The area where you cut probably loses it's SR qualities, but inside the cut (most of the remaining pill) should release slowly. That's how it was explained to me; I hope this is useful. BTW, the SR gave me a much lower side effect profile than the regular Wellbutrin. Neither helped with depression, but that would really be asking too much. My wife routinely cuts anti-depressant pills While it's possible that you might get extra in one half, I doubt it's going to be a huge amount extra. Besides, if it's the lowest dose, what is going to happen when you stop it? You will be going from 150 to zero if that is the lowest dose. If it's not dangerous to do that, then it's definitely not dangerous to be varying the dose a little on a daily basis (and if wellbutrin has a long half life, maybe the doses will overlap anyway in your system). If it's possible to chew wellbutrin, you could crush the pill and then mix it up and then take half of the crushed pill, as this might be more likely to be a half. I've heard of some people doing this.
