I have a friend who has been on zoloft for 2 years and is taking 100 mg. She expresses interest in getting off of it. I would love to hear related stories from the group. Especially what it's like stopping it. Anything about experiences with Zoloft really... Also, Is it possible that a psychiatrist would continue prescribing it just so he could keep a person as a regular "patient"?
Answer:
My highest dosage of Zoloft was 150 mgs before I quit it cold turkey. That's a bad bad bad idea. Never do that =) I was also taking 200 mg of Trazodone to help me sleep (quit that too). The reason I'd quit was, I'd reached a *really* bad time in my life; I was drinking a LOT, not taking the drugs in their intended amounts (for instance, I'd take 300 mgs of Zoloft in the morning and sometimes take up to 600 mgs of Trazodone to knock me out). So I just stopped taking them, not consulting my doctors at all throughout the entire process. I put myself back on 50 mgs of Zoloft about two months after quitting. The drug did improve my mood, I'll give it that. However, I had the worst sleep pattern in the history of the world: some nights I wouldn't fall asleep until 6 AM, some days after going to bed around 1 am I wouldn't get out of bed until 3 PM. I decided to wait and see if things didn't change, and in the meantime, I looked at other antidepressants. Around the end of November, I got sick of the sleeping problems, and switched to Wellbutrin. I would recommend Zoloft, assuming it doesn't give you sleeping problems. They may suggest Trazodone or a similar drug to help you sleep, but anyone I know who's taken it (including myself) has trouble waking up while on it. That, and it's possibly lethal in high doses, so it's not to be taken by anyone who's suicidal (which makes sense =) ). I have been on Zoloft for almost three years. I have no complications with the drug or coming off it....my only problem is I take myself off it and the depression starts again about 5-6 weeks after I've been on it. I've been diagnosed as Major depression and panic disorder......
