Question:
Now that I'm almost off Zoloft (down to 25 mg from 75 mg), I wonder if I can beat my depression through weekly sessions with my therapist (who is not the prescriber -- that is another doctor) alone?

Answer:
I'm not sure what the latest research says, but historically the general opinion is that cognitive or cognitive-behavioral therapy works very well for depression, ADs work well, and the combination works better. You might consider using the meds until you get into the talking cure for awhile, then talking to your docs about tapering off. If the psychologist (not an MD, a PhD) and the psychiatrist (an MD) work together to help you, they ought to be able to coordinate on a plan. Look in Consumer Reports for a report on therapy sometime in the past year or two. Also, some of the mental health links, or search on "cognitive therapy". Your psychologist should be pretty conversant on this topic, and ought to be able to come up with the studies to back up his/her opinions. You didn't say whether the prescribing doc is a pdoc or general practitioner. All of these medicines seem to have their drawbacks; I use Effexor XR and the side effects have mostly been sexual (though the Wellbutrin is helping that). Anyway, my pdoc seems to think general practitioners stick to Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac without giving other meds the proper consideration. Something to think about.
