anyone been there, done that, and can advise? been treated w/ zoloft for dysthymia and it was very very effective, but one side effect got to me after a while, and was none too good for my relationship with my partner either. doc reccomended aurorix (an MAO) but I have read that serzone is an SSRI (zoloft was very effective) but with less incidence of lifestyle inhibiting side effects.
Answer:
Apologies if I sound like a smarty-pants, but you're really just going to have to try both. I had no luck with Aurorix but the other MAOIs have been very successful for curing atypical depression mixed with some severe agoraphobia. Going through the process of trying different ADs can be a pain, but sooner or later you'll find the one who works. You might want to consider Wellbutrin SR. It also, apparently, has no sexual side-effects (which you subtlely hinted at in your post). I take a small dose of it (100 mg) to counteract the sexual side-effects of the Paxil I'm on, and it works pretty well. So an antidepressant dose (more like 300 - 450 mg) might work for your dysthymia and cause no sexual dysfunction. About Serzone - when I first went back on ADs I was adamant that I wouldn't take anything that had any sexual side-effects, so they gave me Serzone. I HATED it. It brought on anxiety (which it can do, even though it's supposed to relieve anxiety) and made me feel so incredibly zonked out that after 3 weeks I begged to be put on anything else, even an SSRI which would cause sexual dysfunction. I much prefer Paxil, and the WB helps with the sex part. I've also gotten the impression from much research on the web that many docs consider Serzone an inferior anti-depressant... it might be okay for dysthymia though. But ask your doc about Wellbutrin.
