My wife has recently successfully weaned herself off effexor. During this withdrawal, she experience severe anxiety and weird 'electric shocks' in her head. I am thankful to contributors to this website for warning us of these withdrawal problems, thereby alleviating her concern somewhat, and identifying them as a consequence of effexor withdrawal, and reassuring her it was temporary. (You would expect this kind of advance warning from your doctor!) What are the experiences of other users of Wellbutrin with respect to a) controlling depression, b) the reported side effects?
Answer:
When you get to the end of tapering off Effexor, there does come a point where you just have to stop, the last phase is getting off it and there are a few days of discomfort, try to time it accordingly. It's not like you crave the drug, you just know it will make the "dizzy feeling" go away. I'm just coming down from Effexor,and it was bad -- stomach problems, headaches -- "hang-over" type feeling, muscle aches.. bleh. However, Paxil wasn't as bad coming off of it slowly. The problems I had with it was when I'd miss a couple of days and have the mother of all headaches. I stopped a combination of Prozac and Welbutrin neither of which seemed to help me that much and started Effexor the next day. So far I felt no strong effects of either giving up the other drugs or starting Effexor except I think there is less anxiety. Don't look forward to getting off it if what people say is true. I don't really know if Wellbutrin had any effect on me because I took it with Prozac.
