Question:
I'd like to take the opportunity to raise awareness about the role of hypoglycemia in depression. It is possible for hypoglycemia and depression to exist together, as they do in me and another person I know, and the overlap of symptoms can make life awful. In my own case, before I successfully treated myself for hypoglycemia, suicide was presenting itself more and more often, mostly because I was simply feeling too exhausted to go on.

Answer:
Now I can really give you a challenge: I am on a low fat diet because of heart artery disease! Have also had hypoglycemia in the past, and also been treated for depression several years. I will ask my Pdoc about this, but afraid my heart will have to come first! My experience is that regular snacks of high *protein* stabilize the hypo, as opposed to fat, per se. Gads, what a dietary nightmare I could have if I let it get to me!. Fooey, most of it is in the genes anyway. I'm actually interested in this - it may explain why I just collapse 1/2 hour after breakfast, even though I have been up for a couple of hours and been to the gym. My doctor thinks I am mildly hypoglycemic, but have never been tested for it. I get the shakes if I go too long without eating and it triggers migraines as well. It never occurred to me that this reaction could be related. It's not like I eat high sugar stuff for breakfast though, I tend to eat high fibre cereals with skim milk and fruit. The original post is long, but doesn't reference anywhere I can look into this further. The suggested diet sounds kind of odd; I stick to a low fat diet because I want to look after my health. High protein snack - with no fat (can't imagine why anyone would recommend it anyway) - I take 1 1/2 cups of skim milk and 1/2 cup of fat free yogurt (flavours, if I feel so inclined) and a banana, throw it all in a blender (I use one of those hand held ones that goes in the glass) and puree. Variations abound, using other fruits. If you really want some fat in it, use a different type of yogurt or milk.
