I've been following you all for awhile now, but this is my first post. I'd like to know what anyone might know about Parnate and MAOI's. I'm terrified of them. Briefly, I started Prozac in '89 and had tremendous success, no side effects, until 8 years later I started blanking out (sometimes while driving!) and not being able to stay awake throughout the day, napping up to three times a day. We added Wellbutrin and I had Major Panic Attack and refused to take it again. She switched me over to Effexor, which was OK for awhile but I was still napping.
Answer:
I took this medication for three months or so five years ago. It didn't help but it didn't kill me either. Just remember which foods trigger that stroke reaction in MAOI users and avoid them (they all seem to have a common thread..."funkiness" I guess I could call it). When I started the medicine I thought I would go around terrified of eating anything, but found avoiding the potentially dangerous foods relatively easy. The list of foods to avoid is long, but it doesn't contain the things we eat most. Its unlikely you'll find yourself in despair over being cut off from things like "aged cheese" and "kippered meat". You might have trouble feeding yourself if a war breaks out, but otherwise you should be fine! I've been down about the same road you have been. I started on Parnate 3 weeks ago. Overall, the psychological thought of stroking out is much worse than the actuality. The "extensive" food restriction list is really on the cautionary side. For the first week, I worried about having wine or eating things with soy in them. I didn't have ANY reactions to them or other items. Also, if you do have a reaction to them, it CAN be a gradual event, where you have time to get to an hospital and get an anticdote. My pdoc said as long as I stay away from aged cheese, smoked meats and the like; while eating the rest in moderation, I should be fine. I don't know the numbers, but I believe that very few patients have actually "stroked out" on the MAOI's. I have a little experience on the subject, but not much. I'm not a dr. To me it sounds like your body is getting strung out, if not burnt out from the med. stress ect... Sounds like switching around is just making it worse. Take it easy and allow body a med. rest. Switch and then stick it out for a while. After taking Prozac for so long your body may have built resistance to it counter acting the original effect. I have found that exercise has the best results. Exhaust the body physically not stressfully or medically. Any way for what it is worth. I kind of have rebelled against the drugs as I have seen it work for a period of time, but down the road they don't. Find other ways to get the results you desire.
