Question:
My doctor put me on Paxil after two days on this drug I had almost every side effect known about this drug. So we stopped it. She now has suggested theraphy. How does one go about finding a person who is good with dealing in depression? Since it is not covered by my extended health I can not afford to put a lot of money out on someone who will not be able to help me. How long should you try someone before you decide they are not helping you? What background and degrees should they have?

Answer:
In answer to your question, NO. I personally believe that the medications will work much faster and put you in a position to better deal with therapy. I have been on Paxil for over a year. I am however presently weaning off of it due to weight gain an starting Celexa. There have been excellent reports on this product in past postings. It is too early for me to expand on it. I went to therapy for close to two years, it was nice having someone who had to listen to me, but my insurance covers it with a $10.00 copay. If it had come out of my own pocket, I don't think I would have found it that nice. While I was going to therapy, I also had to go to a pdoc for meds. My own experience with the meds, I started with Prozac and it made me sick, jittery, upset stomach., they switched me to Trazadone, I slept well but it didn't make me feel not depressed, Paxil, worked good at first but when the dosage was increased it made me so tired so they gave me Wellbutrin but I worried about the seizure side effect so I quit Paxil and went to Wellbutrin alone and I felt and acted pretty bitchy so I quit that but the depression came back. My regular doctor says it is a chemical brain thing and she put me on Effexor Xr, I feel better, not suicidal and not hopeless. I have read a bit about depression and medication not only here but also on mental health sites on the web and I think most people taking medication have been switched from one to another until the right one is found. If it was me, I would want to try something else, before I committed to therapy, but that's me. I'm kind of new to this (new to treatment, not new to depression), but from all I've read, both as a patient and as a psychology major, a combination of drugs and therapy (preferably cognitive/behavioral therapy, which works from the premise that how you think about the events in your life reinforces, or even triggers, the neurochemical reactions that "cause" the depression) is the standard course of treatment for depression. In theory, anyway, the drugs and the talk therapy complement each other-- the drugs stabilize your mood and give you some solid ground from which to conduct the therapy. They take you away from the brink and give you some room to work (in therapy) on some of the negative self-talk and pessimistic interpretation of events in your life that, without the stabilizing influence of the drugs, produce the familiar sense of hopelessness and sends you tumbling into the abyss. You can ask a therapist their methods or theoretical orientation when you call to inquire about making an appointment.
