I took St. John's Wort for several months at recommended rates and it seemed like the whole time I had a certain amount of wheezing and coughing. I've never had allergies before that I know of, though this summer I did find out that I was allergic to tree pollen. I've never read that wheezing/coughing was a side affect of SJW - could the association be my imagination? I had no other signs of allergies (itching, red eyes, runny nose, etc). Any comments or insights would be appreciated.

I read somewhere that it can do that to people with hay fever or ragweed/pollen allergies. It's possible that you have mild asthma (assuming that your symptoms are mild). Eight to 10 percent of the US population has asthma although many don't realize it because they don't get significant symptoms. I've seen it in a national-level athlete involved in testing we were doing and he didn't realize it even though he had noticed some breathing difficulties at times. It's possible to develop asthma as you get older. Also, some people that wouldn't otherwise be diagnosed with asthma will develop an asthma-like condition when they're sick or otherwise "challenged." I don't know if SJW could cause these symptoms or not, but a tree pollen allergy or other unknown allergies can, even without other allergic symptoms present. There are tests for asthma, but it may not be necessary if your symptoms are mild. If your doctor prescribes an Albuterol inhaler (or other bronchodilator) you may find that it controls the symptoms. Then just use it as needed.
