I just started on Paxil 2 days ago. I will take 10mg for a week and then go up to 20 mg. The doctor chose this because he said it would help with weight loss and I am already overweight. I didn't even think to ask or discuss other side effects, and the papers that usually come with samples were not in the boxes. This is the first time I have been on any type of anti-depressant and I would really like to know what to expect.
Answer:
Paxil was the 9th kind of antidepressant that I tried. It worked wonders for my depression and saved my life. BUT I have gained 40 lbs in the 2 years I've been on it, and I am trying to decide what to do about it. I've been on Paxil for about 1 1/2 years and I've gained some weight and can't seem to take it off. My doctor says that it depends on the person. I've tried Zoloft and it was a horrible experience, and the Paxil seems to be working rather well (i.e. rarely have suicidal tendencies, no side effects from what I can tell, etc.) A friend and I both take Paxil. She's been taking around 40 mgs/day, I think, for a year for obsessive-compulsive disorder. I've been taking it for less than 2 months for bipolar. Her side effects have pretty much disappeared - I think she originally had problems with sleepiness primarily. I'm not sleepy- in fact, I have to take it in the morning or I can't sleep very well. However, I had a lot of problems with nausea up until a week or so ago. Like you, I was on increasing doses, and every time I went up (eventually to 30 mg/day), I started all over with more nausea. I still have some trouble with constipation/diarrhea, but that is better, too. I think you might want to remember 2 things - first, that side effects vary from person to person, and secondly, that sometimes (although not always) the side effects disappear over time. So have patience and hang in there. I will say this drug has been great for my brain, anyway, although it took several weeks (and the 30 mg dose) for me to really feel good again. If you are worried about weight gain (like me and most women I know), then be very good to yourself in what you choose to eat and increase your walking or other exercise a little bit each day. I know that's pretty obvious, but I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain until you know how YOU respond to the drug.
