I just had a crappy weekend, and I was posting before how Wellbutrin would send me off into mani..even a small dose like 1/4 tablet of 150mg. Well....I've tried even smaller, by cuttin the 1/4 tab in half, and my doc upped my Klonipin to 3mg a day. So, with a pill cutter, I take on average about 17mg of Wellbutrin a day. Now, many doubt this is EVEN REMOTELY effective...but for somebody with anxiety/depression, this may be the trick Don't forget, Dr. Michael Norden in his book "Beyond Prozac" states that he will start his patients who have anxiety off with 1 mg of liquid Prozac a day. I still think the recommended doses of most a.d.'s for people who also suffer anxiety is WAY too high, and many agree. So, I am gonna give this a shot...and I'll let you all know how I make out. Don't forget...Wellbutrin is a VERY powerful drug...even at REGULAR doses...it is known to cause seizures in many.
Answer:
17mg of Wellbutrin is just about worthless from what I have read, considering the normal therapeutic dose is 300mg/day. Seem to recall the original 'recommended' dose was 600mg/day when the medicine first came out, but the incidence of seizures at that dose caused them to lower it. Maybe 100mg/day would be helpful for some small number of people but I doubt 17mg/day is helpful at all. You can bet they would have gotten it down to 15 or 20mg if it was effective much at all. Of course if you have a bad reaction to the medicine, any dose is too high and you should try something else. If 37.5mg of Wellbutrin sends you through the roof I would not even bother continuing it - try another med. If you do not have a bad reaction with Wellbutrin the 'jitters' and insomnia usually go away after the first week. It helps to raise the dose more slowly I have found. I started at 200mg/day for a week then went up to 300mg/day - this of Wellbutrin SR which you _cannot_ cut with a pill cutter like regular Wellbutrin. I still experienced side-effects the first week at 200mg/day but they were much less severe than the last time I started at 300mg/day. The seizure risk is not high on Wellbutrin, just higher than other meds. Risk gets higher as you increase the one-time dose. At 300mg/day it is like 1/1000, at 400mg/day it is like 4/1000, considerably higher at 600mg/day I think. Risk increases if you have a history of seizures or if you drink alcohol while on the med.
