Has anyone been able to stay active while taking Parnate? I gained a lot of weight and was dizzy on Nardil. I just started on Parnate and would like to continue to do my rock climbing, running, and workouts.
Answer:
I am on day 26 of Parnate (30mg to 50mg) and have noticed Quite a bit of sedation compared to what many say of this drug, that it is 'activating'. I previously took Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) for 5 years, so this may explain why I have trouble 'feeling' the 'activating' effects of Parnate. It has been a so-so drug for me so far, but I guess it is still too early to tell. The good news is that Parnate tends to be activating while Nardil tends to be sedating. Now don't get worried but Parnate is converted in the brain into a substance that is nearly chemically identical to an amphetamine. This explains the tendency for the activation that Parnate produces. Anxious insomniac patients should usually be prescribed Nardil. Lethargic fatigued patients should usually be prescribed Parnate. Due to the amphetamine conversion it is possible for Parnate to produce a hypertensive-crisis by interacting with itself. Approximately 3% of patients experience mild-extreme reactions. Many psychiatrists (not mine, Ha! ) are quite wary of prescribing Parnate until all other options have been tried. Case studies with Parnate (Tranylcypromine) are sporadic and personal testimonials are far too limited to find a definitive answer as to the EXACT effectiveness of Parnate for Social Phobia.
