Question:
I am currently on Paxil, 20 mg/day, and the anxiety and depression is fairly well under control until nighttime, when I have great difficulty sleeping. My psych. prescribed Ativan .5-1 mg to help me sleep. I have used Ambien in the past; at my initial visit to an internist she prescribed me me 3 months' worth of 10 mg. I find the Ambien much better at putting me to sleep than the Ativan, and I don't feel so dragged out the next day. I was thinking of asking the psych. to give me a prescrip for Ambien, as my old one is running out in a couple of weeks, and use it instead of the Ativan. Has anyone here been on Ambien long term; any problems or experiences you could tell me about?

Answer:
I was only on Ambien for two weeks. The first night I took it I had a great nights sleep. After that it did nothing at all for me, was like swallowing a certs. If it works for you I say go for it. I used 10mg dose, it worked great the first month but then i guess i had began to have a tolerance, so i had to take like 3pills just to get to sleep, it's a very safe drug unless you drive your car whille on it, and if you drink and take it, it will produce a very good high, lasting about 2hours, but you will feel like it lasts 5 instead. I took some Ambien last night because the Prozac is keeping me awake. The doctor wants me to use it for three nights, then see if I can stay alseep without. If I can't then we'll do something else. She said there was another AD that she could give me in a small dose that would knock me out and it's non-addictive. This is the first real night of sleep I've had in like a week and a half. I was given Ambien 10mg when I started taking Paxil last year. I'm taking 40mg Paxil daily now and it's working great, but it does interfere with my sleep sometimes. I continue to use Ambien on an irregular basis. Some nights I sleep without it but usually not real well. I don't want to take it every night, though, so I use it 1/3 to 1/2 of the time, usually to catch up after a couple of nights of so-so sleep. I've had no problems with this regimen and 10mg continues to work very well when I need it. It doesn't make me feel drugged but just allows me to sleep normally. I can still get up and function if I need to. If I continue to have sleep problems my pdoc wants to switch me to Trazadone for sleep, but for now I'd rather not take anything every night unless I really have to. I'd say take the Ambien, at least for a while.
