I am new to Lithium. I've been taking it for one week, strictly for depression. I have always been leary of lithium, and other drugs for that matter. I took Prozac for about 5 years, but it didn't help really. What do you all think of Lithium? Is there anything better? My doctor says there isn't. I'm afraid of side effects.
Answer:
Depending how much your taking lithium isn't to bad. I take 1800 mg a day and the side effects are tiredness, lack of concentration and general lethargy. It's helped with the mania but not the depression. Aside from the fact that Lithium is a salt and not a mood-altering drug, I'd be speaking from ignorance. I know it's important to monitor your blood level regularly because apparently it's a difficult salt to stabilize and the dosage must be adjusted periodically. I've been taking Lithium for about 8 months , read the insert or fact sheet from the pharmacy personally I'm taking 300mg a day 2 150 time released pills and have only had shaking for which I take enderal to counter the elevating of my blood presure I know if you get to much you will feel confused and and blood test are nessary to determin safe levels .
