Recently I was talking with someone who told me that the reason that parnate was not really prescribed any more was that it is not really effective and that Nardil is Much more effective. Is there any truth to this? What are the differences between Parnate and Nardil? Does one work while the other does not? Is one more effective? Is one stronger? Do they work the same way? What about side effects? Do they both affect sex-drive? Please advise. I am taking parnate 40mg/day for 17 days and I am quite worried. Have I been wasting my time? Should I switch to Nardil?
Answer:
I've taken both, and stopped taking Parnate because it made me nauseous. It seems that Nardil is much more popular, although I don't know if it's because it's thought to be more effective. Marplan worked even better than Nardil (for me, anyway) but Roche stopped manufacturing it a few years ago. Both are MAOIs - I don't know if there are subtle differences in how they work. And I don't think one is stronger than the other. Both have the food restrictions, and both can affect the libido. It's really up to the individual. Nardil depressed my libido for a while but it all came back... the thing I don't like about Nardil is that I really have to watch my weight. If it's not working after three weeks I would switch to Nardil. Have you tried any other antidepressants - tricyclics or SSRIs? And keep in mind, one person's cure isn't everybody's. For example, both tricyclics and SSRIs have no effect on my depression. No, not true at all. many people find parnate more effective - many find nardil more effective. My personal experience is that parnate is more energizing and has fewer side-effects. Your personal experience may vary. Parnate worked for me after 5 years of trying almost every tricyclic and ssri in the book. It stopped working after 9 years, but that's not a bad run. Nardil didn't do a thing for me.
