Five days ago, I recently got my Wellbutrin dose doubled from 150mg to 300mg (once daily). Today, I was giving my son a bath and, all of a sudden, I saw about 10 live head lice crawling through his hair. After I realized what I was seeing, they all went back under the hair surface and disappeared (about 2 seconds from start to finish). Now, we've been battling head lice all this week so it wasn't really surprising that they were there but the number, size, and obviousness of them really was a surprise. Has anyone experienced hallucinations while on Wellbutrin?
Answer:
What did you mean your daily dose was? Did you say you are on 300mg/day _total_ (150mg twice a day)? Or 300mg twice a day (600mg total?). You should _not_ be taking it only once a day except when taking a low dose in the beginning. Normally Wellbutrin SR should be taken twice a day, with the doses spread out by at least eight hours to avoid the risk of seizures - according to the above document. The non SR (sustained release) version is usually taken three times a day. From everything I have read and been told the medicine cannot achieve a steady state in your system unless taken more than once a day. 300mg/day is the normal daily dose (150 mg twice a day). It is sometimes raised to 400mg/day. Higher doses are not recommended anymore due to risk of seizures and other side-effects are more prevalent as the dose is raised. 300mg at one dose sounds way too high unless you have been taking it for a while and your doctor raised it gradually to 600mg/day - unusual but not unheard of from my reading. The higher the dose the greater the risk of more side-effects. If you reduce the dose or spread it out you may get rid of the hallucinations. I have experienced these "bug" type hallucinations on Wellbutrin. Mine are usually fast moving, peripheral "cockroach" or "mouse" out of the sides of my vision range. Especially at 300 mg. I got used to them. They usually diminsh. Or else your kids got some freaky things going on in his hair!
