Question:
I just started taking Prozac (10 mg/day) and I'd like to know how it's going to make me feel. (I don't feel any different yet). I've been shy since the day I was born, and I think I've been at least mildly depressed since high school (I'm almost 27 now). I'm kind of nervous about how it will affect me. Will I finally be more outgoing? Will I finally be able to take initiative with my career? What is your experience with medication?

Answer:
It will take a while (4-6 weeks) to start to feel the effects of the medication. And this may or may not be the right one. It takes time to find just the one that will work for you. I have been on 4 different SSRIs in a total of 7 years. I am now on Zoloft 200mg a day and it seems to be doing the trick. As for your shyness, if the shyness is not a symtom of your depression I really don't think that the prozac will help it. It may just be your personallity. But if it is a symtom then it should help to get you back into the swing of things. Do you have a counciler as well as a doctor, or a support group? It is best to be able to talk to someone outside your self to see how things are going. Everyone responds differently to each ad medication so whatever you hear may not necessarily apply to you. With that said, it took about 4 weeks for Prozac to really have a positive effect on me. And unlike the earlier response, it did have an effect on my shyness. I just felt much more outgoing and found it a lot easier to talk to strangers. Perhaps that's just a result of a lifting of my depression, I don't know, but I'm glad whatever the reason. It's tough to tell someone who is depressed to "wait those 4-6 weeks" but unless the side effects are so uncomfortable, you really do have to give it time to work. I was ready to give up after 3 weeks (still felt terrible), but during that 4th week things improved. And it wasn't even me who noticed the improvement, but those around me remarked how much better I looked and acted.
