I've just returned to a 75 mg/day effexor (50 in morning, 25 at dinner time) treatment plan after 18 months drug free. Settled on effexor after trying paxil, wellbutrin, zoloft, remeron, probably others I don't remember right now. Both my wife and I preferred effexor - I was steady and "normal" and not spacey or too happy (zoloft made me positively giddy). So I'm back on effexor and will be back in talk therapy in a few weeks. Does anyone out there have any experience with using Viagra to overcome the sexual dysfunction side effects?
Answer:
Did you have this problem the first time you were on Effexor? I found the opposite with the Effexor when I went on it..it sped me up so much I was having sex all the time..too bad it didnt last..and then it went the same way you are experiencing..(female version)..but I have been on several other AD that totally left me 'high and dry' (excuse the pun) ...I finally opted to get off the meds..it can be almost as frustrating as long-term depression itself!! (*Dr I was seeing was NO help at all..it was embarassing enough to have to come out and say : "hey doc, I cant reach climax!" But the dr just sort of smiled and had nothing to say about it. I know that depression can kill your sex drive but when you finally find something that helps the depression, the cure shouldnt ruin your sex life also. I think its 'SWELL' that science has brought out Viagra for the guys..now they gotta get it 'scribed for the gals! I have had that problem with Effexor, which I have been on for just a little over a year. What I find is that eventually, and I mean *eventually*, the sexual side effects become less severe. It took months, and every time you change dosages you may have to go through this period of adjustment. Another trick I learned, and my doctor doesn't approve, but screw him, ( no pun intended ) is to drop the dosage down to the bare minimum to keep withdrawals away when I'm stable. If I crash, I'll crank up the dosage, it only takes a day or two for the higher dose to kick in. I have tried other drugs to try to counteract the anorgasmia and half-assed boners, but to no avail. It's a trade off I'm willing to make, as Effexor is the only drug that has ever worked for me.
