I started parnate 3 days ago at 20mg (two 10mg, taken in the morning) Two questions. 1) How long will it take before this drug becomes effective. (2) Is 20mg an 'adequate' dosage or am I not really going to get much response from 20mg. How about 30mg? Any difference between 20mg and 30mg? Also, do you take your dosage all at once or twice (three?) times a day?
Answer:
I'm taking Parnate, and have tried the range from 20 to 60mg. The 'PDR' recommended range is 30-60mg per day, and I think that is pretty much the standard range used. 1) Parnate is said to be 'fast acting', and that has been my experience. I noticed an affect the day of taking, and perhaps different effects for several days. The PDR recommends waiting 1-2 weeks I believe, a book by Jack Gorman says dose increases can occur with Parnate based on response every 3-4 days, so I guess everybody's opinion is a bit different. My own personal opinion - is that about what Jack Gorman says, every few days if the effect isn't there - to try increasing the dose. I think most p-docs are more conservative. (Don't want to 'overprescribe'). 2) Well - the recommended range is generally 30-60, so although 20mg/day might be enough for some, trying increasing the dose until a satisfactory responce is obtained seems more reasonable to me. If you aren't completely happy with your responce, my own opinion is to raise to 30mg.
