Since quitting smoking, I had seasonal depression the last two years. Doctor put me on Paxil. I started on Monday. Tuesday I was mentally dead. Yesterday was really good - clarit and feeling the ability to cope. Today, I'm expereincing some anxiety. I hear that one must "hang in" fot two weeks or so for side effects to go away. Can you share light on this.

Hmmm - smoking.... is it possible that all of this started when I quit smoking? Or started when I started smoking - let's see, first cigarette at 13, first depressive episode at 14, quit smoking at 30, been depressed ever since... Cigarettes are both my tormentor and saviour! (It's been 8 years without a cigarette and I still get cravings.) When I stopped, my doctor said I was the most addicted person he had ever met, both physically and phycologically - I should just try to cut down and not bother quitting. He was sooo helpful. Just the incentive I needed to do it. It takes a few weeks for any anti-depressant to become fully effective. If you have not received a good response by then (3 weeks to a month) the doc will usually increase the dosage a couple of times and then if it is still ineffective, try a different anti-depressant. Yep it's true. Everyone responds differently to each anti-depressant and has different intensities of a range of side effects. It can take a week to a month for your body and brain to adjust to the medication. If the side effects are unbearable after a month, talk to your doc about it. I found the initial side effects of paxil went almost completely away after the first three weeks. What ever you do, don't stop taking the medication or you will reset the adjustment period back to the beginning! The only side effect that did not become bearable after a month was the sexual dysfunction effects.
