My question is.... what is the best way to get off this drug with the minimum amount of nausea and depression??
Answer:
I was not on long enough to develop any real dependency, but I did experience some turbulence. I did not like it because it made me sooo tired. But my suggestion is to taper off 10 mg at a time, over at least a 4-week period. And very important: I would begin, or continue, a vigorous exercise program that included 45 of aerobics (bike or stairmaster or running) and a round of nautilus weight training. This will do wonder for you, and get your bod back in tune with itself. Additionally, it will absorb and stress/anxiety as you taper down, and you'll feel a natural sense of exhaustion at the end of each day. This will especially good for you if you're not keeping an office schedule right now--excellent for organizing your day and maintaining a sense of focus and set of goals. Don't underestimate the basic value of this approach if you really want to readjust your body to being off the meds. There is such an impulse to take them again when you feel bad physically, and this routine will help. Not to mention the endorphins. I spent a couple years at 40-80mg and had NO withdrawal when I quit and started on a low dose of Prozac (20mg). If you are looking to quit, why not do it cold turkey and tough it out. I know that you lost you insurance when you quit, but, are you SURE that you want to quit taking antidepressants? That's actually more than one question. If you want to stop taking Paxil, you'd better go very very slow. One of the posters mentionned quitting cold turkey, it's not a good idea unless you're started at the same time on another drug. Paxil is known to give bad side-effects when stopping abruptly. Most psych. would tell you to drop by 25% every week(at least here in Europe). That is, if you take 40mg, take 30mg for a week, then 20mg etc.. There is such a thing called "Paxil withdrawal syndrom". I'm not trying to scared you off, just to be careful. I went through the symptoms myself and it took about a month (and starting Prozac) to feel sort of normal again.
