That vitamin P has inhibited my tendency for depression so well -for almost 6 years- I am loath to consider switching meds. But for the last 2 years or so, I have suffered an apathy all too common for SSRI users; very little passion about anything, a sort of "who cares?" type attitude toward most things, etc. The apathy has a deleterious effect on my artistic inclinations -and sex - too. Since suffering a breakthrough depression a couple years ago (having been on 20/mg/day for four years), my psychiatrist and I upped the dose to 40, then 60mg/day.
Answer:
You may need to boost some of the other neurotransmitters involved in maintaining normal mood and motivation. The Prozac could be boosting "what me worry?" serotonin at the expense of the more get up and go neuros: norepinephrine, dopamine, and phenylethylamine. These can be boosted by taking supplements of their precursors: tyrosine and/or L- or DL- phenylalanine, along with a high-potency multivitamin & mineral supp to facilitate their safe conversion. Another possibility: Ask your psych about adding a pinch of thyroid to your regime, ~25 mcg T3 or the equivalent in dessicated whole thyroid or extract. There are people who believe that aspartame is Satan and that one of asp's main ingredients, L-phenylalanine (LPA), is the primary source of its dark powers. I've discussed and debated this in a few posts/threads over the last couple of years, and, if you don't mind the hassle, I'd suggest you just do a news search for "Syd Baumel" and aspartame to get the scoop. Bottom line: I suspect aspartame really does disagree with some/many users and may be frankly toxic in very large quantities, most likely due to its aspartic acid and methanol content, but that LPA itself is about as safe as most nutritional supplements, i.e. it can be contraindicated or disagreeable for some people, but seems innocuous for most. I've taken about 500 mg a day on a low protein stomach as an antidepressant for most of the last ~18 years, and I don't think it's done me any harm.
