Has anyone tried taking 5-HTP... i have heard that it helps in serotonin production.

Yes, I have been taking 5-HTP since Sept. 1 and it has helped me quite a bit. I was using SJW and 5-HTP only for my severe depression of 3 years and it helped with the insomnia, overeating, and eliminated the physical pain I was experiencing. It also helped my depression but as the winter days grew shorter I began to fall deeper into the depression so I started taking an antidepressant, Zoloft along with SJW and 5-HTP. I noticed results in my improved mood and better thinking the second day after starting Zoloft instead of the 3 - 6 weeks it is supposed to take before the effects become obvious. you're talking about L-tryptophan!! Contaminated batches from a Japanese firm (Showa Denko) apparently caused many people to become ill with eosinophilia myalgia. The concern being addressed with 5htp was: in combination with serotonin reuptake inhibitors, it is likely that a certain percentage of the population will develop serotonin syndrome, which is caused NOT by comtaminated product, but by having way too much serotonin in your system. You failed to mention that the Mayo Clinic researchers are presenting only one side of the 5-HTP controversy (their side). You also failed to "snip" the end of the article, which presents a dissenting opinion which states that "The Mayo Clinic's opinion of 5-HTP is based more on speculation than on science".
