My problem is: Since about the second week of the Serzone therapy, I have been feeling more anxious, irritable, and just "blue" in general (I didn't have the irritability and depression before) . I feel "on edge" all the time now. Can the drug have such an adverse reaction on certain people? Is Serzone considered a substitute for drugs such as Xanax?

It's unclear from your post exactly how long you've been on the Serzone, but the anxiety &c may be an early side effect. I'd give the drug about 6 weeks before deciding it's not for you. I wonder why, if you liked the Xanax, s/he switched you. This sort of I'm-playing-God-and-know-better-than-you attitude is what I hate about physicians. After "First, do no harm," Hippocrites ought to have said: "Second, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Yes, I think internists and G.P.'s are very reluctant to use Xanax. However, a psychiatrist is usually more forthcoming with the medication, in my experience. (Especially if you exhibit signs of pretty significant anxiety or panic attacks.) I found the Serzone made me very anxious, and did nothing to relieve my anxiety. In fact, facets of my personality changed for the duration of taking t ( 9 months ). Apparently it can unmask anxiety, or make it worse. I feel better now since I have stopped taking it. But, the good news!! You may get a better response if you try asking for Klonopin instead. I use it and prefer it to Xanax. It is a benzodiazepine, like Xanax, but it is much longer acting. This avoids the rebound anxiety that can occur if you miss a dose of Xanax, and in general it feels more like "normal life" to me than life on Xanax.
