Question:
I am now on 20mg of parnate once in the morning (down from 80mg a day) and I need some advice on how to go off of the parnate all together...I am going to try Nardil out and I need to go off of parnate and then 2 weeks on nothing at all. Does anyone have experience doing this? What am I in for? What can I do to prepare? Can I just cut off the parnate quickly or do I need to taper.

Answer:
There's a site with quite a lot of information on MAOIs. I've compiled quite a list of such sites, but what I like about this one is that it provides two pages (URL is same as url of site, or I would have posted a more direct route), which address various issues for both Parnate and Nardil, so it's almost like a side by side comparison of the two meds: http://panicdis........... Taper off it. MAOI withdrawal is similar to coming down from a cocaine or amphetamine binge. You might want to take a benzo (Klonopin is good) while you're in between antidepressants. MAOIs are perfectly fine antidepressants, but most people do well with newer ones that have fewer side effects and don't have so many dangerous interactions with foods and drugs. If you're switching from one MAOI from another, the washout period isn't as important than if you were going to try a different type of AD - SSRI or a tricyclic. However, docs always feel better if you have a two-week washout minimum. I was switched from Nardil to Prozac a few years ago (BIG mistake, stupid doc) and I had to go for five weeks with nothing at all. I was going through a big trauma at the time and was really, really miserable. Not only food restrictions, but if a doctor is aware of any past experimentation with amphetamines or cocaine, if they have half a brain, they will warn of the potential of a hypertensive crisis or possibly death. I am not suggesting anyone here is in that category, but it's one more potential cause for a physician's anxiety over prescribing MAOI's. There's also stuff like dextermathorfan (sp?): The stuff in over the counter cough syrup, etc.
