I am interested in feedback from persons who are using, or who have successfully used a tricyclic antidepressant(s) to overcome depression or depression/anxiety. These older AD's have generally fallen into disuse in favour of the newer AD's such as the SSRI's, of which Prozac is probably the best known and the most widely used.
Answer:
I used amitriptyline for a year and found it very effective but had the common side-effects of dry mouth and extreme drowsiness. I changed to taking dothiepin (also a tricyclic) and have been on it for two years. It doesn't seem quite so effective an antidepressant as amitriptyline but it does work reasonably well for me and the side-effects are much milder. I have used dothiepin for 7 yrs. Noticeable benefits: improved sleep, improved adherence to 24-hour routine (provided dose is right), improved resting temperature (ie. higher)/ resting metabolism, less depression/ pondering/ morbid brooding, less anxiety. I was on desipramine for 8 years and did very well during that time. (Gave it up when the Prozac hype was at its height to transform my personality and become charming, and to increase my fluency at urinating.)
