Has anyone any idea of the dangers in taking Nardil (I expect to start in the new year) as pertains to these two adverse reactions? Is there any reasonable risk of these occurring?
Answer:
There are other risks with Nardil. Following the "program" of food/drugs to avoid is really the key to avoiding problems. The PDR, which you quoted from, lists many possible side-effects, but then again I've seen a litany of dangers associated with many psych meds. The problems with Nardil, in my experience are more of a nuisance than they are anything that has sent me to the hospital. My experience? Slightly lower sex drive. Occasional MAJOR difficulty achieving orgasm. Lowering the dose will often help. I can only speak for myself when I say that I have seen a lot of side-effects and many were quite unpleasant. Most passed after the initial months of treatment. But I'd do it again without hesitation. All the MAOIs can cause liver toxicity; the original one used for depression, Marsilid, was so bad in this regard that it was dropped from the market. With Nardil or Parnate, LFTs are only necessary if you start having symptoms (e.g., jaundice). Do you mean Marplan? I'm not trying to be finnicky, It's just that I was always curious why they pulled Marplan off the market. According to info on a site I visited recently, one can thru one's doctor still get Marplan. Most meds can be toxic if you don't flush your system with water constantly.... I actually have noticed that regulating my fluid intake can cause subtle manipulations in the effect of my lithium. Note it said in a very few people. Follow your docs advice and you should be fine. If it is a major concern and it is affordable or covered by insurance get regular liver function tests so any toxicity or damage is noticed before it reaches a dangerous level. I have never taken Nardil so I can't help with the sexual aspects..... I hope that the effects are negligible. ;-)
