Does anyone else wonder if they're getting into a vicious cycle of taking more drugs to counter the side effects of all the other drugs they're taking. What was it Elizabeth Wurtzel called her shrink "the sicth avenue crack dealer" or something like that?

I suspect most participants on this ng have been "treatment-refractory" and are hardly representative; thus the preponderance of polypharmacy. And/or maybe American psychiatrists are not limited by the NHS and may more freely apply research findings. I don't know. After looking at all the drug-related desk accessories in my psychiatrist's office, I was starting to wonder if she was expecting a new (blue) car after writing her millionth prescription... Ours is an instant-gratification, pill-popping culture here in the good old US of A. We'd rather liposuction that diet, rather eat diarrhea-causing Olean than practice moderation, rather shoot deer than give them birth-control. It's a bulemic mentality. I instead took the ground that my mind was simply "programmed" incorrectly and that I only need to do a little metaprogramming and everything would be "right as rain". Nine years later... after having been arrested, saved from arrest numerous times by the quick thinking of a friend, blacking out on a regular basis, having friends watch me for 10-12 hours to make sure I hadn't OD, being homeless, agoraphobia, not to mention the loss of tens of thousands of dollars... I decided that maybe a little Prozac and lithium with some remeron for sleep wasn't all that bad in comparison to the cocaine, heroin, morphine, psyilicibin, LSD, oxycodone, THC, benzodiazapam & alcohol that I had been using in various combinations to get through each day. And besides, look at the name of this website again, silly. There are several other websites dealing with depression, psychiatry, etc. where medication is rarely mentioned. alt.support.depression.medication is a very, very small portion of and certainly not indicative of 'all Americans'.
