I've tried effexsor (I buzzed just a little), Paxil (I puked), Prozac (I buzzed hard), Wellbutrin (I twitched), Zoloft (fine except for the sexual numbness I experienced with all of them). I tried the 2 I could tolerate at increasing doses for 6 weeks, without noticing any change. Should I try them for longer? Should I have been able to detect SOME change at the two week mark? Should I keep looking? I'm feeling a little incurable now.
Answer:
It might not be the drug, but the dose. Effexor didn't do much for me at 75mg, but did wonders at 225. I loathed Paxil, Prozac was ok for a while but stopped working. Now on Effexor XR. Seems to be ok, but defintily less great than 3 years ago (when I started Effexor). The short answer is, don't give up. Everyone is different, and different drugs work for different folks. Unfortunately, trial and error is the only way to tell how someone will react with the SRI's and psychopharmaceuticals (sp). Like yourself, I have tried Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Wellbutrin and a couple additional exemplars of modern American pharmaceutical technology. In each case, the shrink said 4-6 weeks were required for results. I lasted 3 days on Prozac (could not handle the stuff, made me think Weird Thoughts and just plain disagreed with me), longer on the others. All of them created a disagreeable level of fatigue, lassitude and ennui. I would assume that you have a doc prescribing the drugs you've tried during your trial membership in the Drug of the Month club. She/he will likely tell you that 4-6 weeks is a minimum to gauge efficacy. I wouldn't give up; there are plenty more drugs out there. You might give St. John's Wort a shot. It is cheap, and it just might work. It certainly won't do any harm (I have yet to see the alleged hyperphotosensitivity side-effect) and it won't mess with your sex life.
