Question:
I wonder if anyone has any advice on dealing with Prozac-induced apathy. I rode the ol' P-Train for a year and a half before getting off because I couldn't stand the feelings of apathy and lethargy. Not to mention the fact that although I was no longer anxious about meeting members of the opposite sex (!) - I was aware that I had lost interest in sex. Such a cruel irony. I started back after five months because of the onset of extreme anxiety but now, at 40mgs. a day, the lethargy, apathy, etc. are back. I am an active person by nature and this won't work for me. Has anyone had to deal with these effects? What did you do?

Answer:
When I first went to a P-doc for social anxiety and depression I was prescribed Prozac. I stayed on it for about 3 months and had to get off it. All I wanted to do while I was on it was sleep. I thought it made my depression worse! Then I was put on Effexor and have been on it for about a year and a half now. It worked okay for the depression for awhile and didn't make me sleepy. According to my P-doc, when the depression lifted, the social anxiety was supposed to go away. In actual fact, the social anxiety has become worse and now the depression is back, stronger than ever. I've been on Effexor SR (timed-release) for about a half-year, so it may be that the timed release doesn't work as well. I was put on the timed-release version because I would sometimes forget to take a pill. I've heard of other people feeling groggy while on Prozac. If I were you, I'd ask the doctor to prescribe something else. I had "general fatigue" for several weeks when beginning Zoloft, but it seemed to subside.....else I learned to control it...I don't know which. I was on Prozac for a short period of time so I cannot relate to that side effect on Prozac. Most SSRI side effects are the same, however, some are more dominant for each individual...ie...I cannot take Prozac, but you can and I can take Zoloft, but you may not be able to. A person in our support group had the same problem, so her dr rx'd Effexor to be taken in the afternoon . She says she is feeling great on this combination. Sometimes combinations are needed instead of just one pill. I am also on a combination, but different pills, and it helped me when nothing else had been working for 3 yrs. Just a thought.
