I'm really in need of some suggestions here. I've been thru enough SSRIs to know that they are simply not for me ( significant weight gain, no sex drive and loss of sensation, severe lightheadedness and alcohol cravings). I've been on Wellbutrin since the end of January and it seems to have all but stopped working. I did lose 15 lbs. and have not had any interest in alcohol since, tho:) For a brief time I did the Wellbutrin/Paxil combination. Mentally and emotionally I was better than I have ever been, but the Paxil has those lovely, unacceptable side effects.
Answer:
From what I've experienced, just about anything that isn't an SSRI will affect your libido, at least temporarily. I currently take Nardil, an MAOI. It works wonderfully for me with no fudge-brain effect; I honestly think I do better work (I'm a writer) on Nardil than off it. But it certainly affected my ability to have an orgasm for 3-4 months (don't worry, it came back eventually, pardon the pun, and everything works just as well as before). As far as weight gain, if you're a cookie monster like me you may have some problems with weight gain. The bigger the dose, the bigger the weight problem it seems But I added some mineral supplements to my diet that have largely stopped the sugar cravings. Why are TCs usually the wrong answer? I would think that MAOIs, with all the restrictions, would be much more likely to cause serious side effects if, or more likely when, the patient goes off the diet. I've been on 2 TCs, and 2 SSRIs. Both SSRIs were entirely ineffective. 1TC wasn't very good. The other TC is wonderful, and I've been on it long term with no side effects. Doxepin (Sinequan). I adjust my own dosage (I know this is not generally thought to be a good way to go, but it works for me), and I've been all the way from 0 (for 4 nervous months) to 300mg (when on Prednisone for asthma). I'm usually on around 150 - 200mg. It's been about 18 yrs, including the 2 yrs my dr tried me on Prozac, Zoloft and Imipramine. He wants me to lose weight. I want to not be clinically depressed. So far, I've won.
