IMS Health, a market research firm, said that globally, retail drug sales went up 6% for the year ending March 31, but in the US they were up 11%. Prescription sales in pharmacies in the US were 68.6 billion dollars. And the increase in the US they said was due to increased sales of sedatives, tranquilizers amd antidepressants.
Answer:
To augment the study from IMS Research which said that the price of prescription drugs had increased 11 percent, one reason is that drug companies are increasing their prices in the U.S. tremendously. The price of a generic form of lorazepam (Ativan) increased 400 percent recently, from $10 for 100 to $40. A poster on the sci-med.pharmacy list (Mar 26, 98) said the price for 2 mg. had increased from $2.55 to $56.00 a hundred. He said he phoned Mylan, and the fellow (bsteinha...@itol.com) said that the response was, "we haven't had an increase in years". Steinhagen told the guy, "$2.55 to $2.95 would have been reasonable. I asked my pharmacist, and he said it went up 400 percent, from $10 to $40 a hundred. The machinations of the pharmaceutico-industrial complex are going to be one of the great scandals of the coming decade, IMHO. As insurance covers less and less, they somehow want people to pay more and more. Either all but the very rich will join HMO's dispensing discount medicine, or the gov't will step in, highly unlikely, or we'll all just keep sliding into debt. I, for example, pay out of pocket; but now the insurance won't even count visits to the shrink toward my deductable. Does that make any sense whatsoever?
