Ive been takin buspar,risperdal and welbutrin.Well I stopped taking the welbutrin the day I started taking 5htp. I Feel a strange (for me) sense of satisfaction with life in general.Hunger is almost eliminated for me,anxiety greatly reduced,no depressive thoughts.I must have been starved for seretonin.No doctor ever gave me any drug that helped me this much

You should get a hold of a remarkable "listening to 5-HTP" kind of paper, circa 1980, by a Dutch psychiatrist named van Hiele. After trying 5- HTP in ~100 of his most chronic, treatment refractory patients. here's what he concluded: "I have never in 20 years used an agent which: (1) was effective so quickly; (2) restored the patients so completely to the persons thay had been and their partners had known; (3) was so entirely without side effects; (4) failed so completely in about 50 percent of depressions. . ." Some 5-HTP products are derived/extracted from griffonia (if i remember the name right); others are synthesized. The latter carry a theoretical risk of becoming contaminated by synthesis byproducts, like the tainted batches of tryptophan ~ten years ago, but i think/hope the odds of another such outbreak are very low. Like so many "new breakthroughs," 5-HTP has been around a long time. The earliest studies, it seems, were in the early 70's -- in Europe (of course) where some doctors have been prescribing it for depression and other conditions almost as long, including van Hiele (yes, the paper was about his already extensive experience with it in 1980).
