Question:
I am starting my fourth week of taking Prozac and I have found that since the first week, I have been experiencing feelings of panic that can last for several hours. I have never had panic attacks before but I read some information on Prozac which indicated that anxiety is a fairly common side effect - more so than other SSRIs. I have taken Paxil in the past and I never experienced this problem.

Answer:
Don't give up yet. I ran the full spectrum of side effects from panic attacks to diahrea when I first started Prozac. It took almost a year before things really balanced out for me. Now, although life is not perfect for me and never will be, I feel like I can deal with the good and the bad things that life dishes out. Hang in there All SSRIs react (work or don't work for) different people. I took PROZAC for only 6 days and I knew it was not for me, but... ZOLOFT is my light at the end of the tunnel. Prior being prescribed PROZAC and then ZOLOFT I was already diagnosed with Panic/Anxiety attacks and took a small dose of Xanax (Alphrazolam) as needed. (very small dose...no more than 1/2 of a .25mg per day) During the first several weeks of taking the ZOLOFT I did have more than the usual panic/anxiety attacks and the Xanax did help me. Hang in there, they do go away... in my experience, Prozac caused the same effect when I started my 20 mg/ day regimen. Don't feel shy about initally supplementing Prozac with Klonopin as needed to get you through the period. Prozac takes at least 8 - 12 to work fully, at least for me.
