Question:
I had been doing pretty well for a few months on moclobemide (Aurorix or Manerix), which was great as the side-effects were minimal, but then the beneficial effects started gradually to wear off, and now my doctor has started me on paroxetine. But I have read since that alcohol can counteract the effect of antidepressants, and as for a time I was drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol, I'm wondering if that might have been the cause of the loss of effectiveness of the moclobemide. Has anyone got any comments about this?

Answer:
I definitely find that the effectiveness of the drugs drop acutely while intoxicated, which probably happens partly because of the depressive nature of the alcohol itself. It also seems to intensify the effect of the alcohol so I keep the drinking to a minimum. When I am not intoxicated the drugs work the same as they did before. I suppose constant heavy drinking would tend to nullify the effect of the drugs. I disagree with this. Just as an SSRI like Paxil will have different effects on different people, the same is true with alcohol, and thus with a Paxil/alcohol combo (can't speak to Manerix). Some people on Paxil will experience hypomanic episodes, some won't. Some intoxicated individuals will see all the inhibitions fly away, others will just slumber. Ask your doctor or pharmacist, they know you best. FYI, I've been on Paxil for ~3.5 yrs., have drank occasionally, & no problems (save a transient elevation in liver enzymes...) I currently am taking Wellbutrin and Effexor, and on occasion have had a few drinks. I have experienced namely two things: either the alcohol seems to have no effect at all, or it has magnified effects. There seems to be no pattern to this. I also take Ativan from time to time, and am careful to avoid alcohol while on Ativan. I know that drinking while taking antidepressants is a pretty fuck-witted thing to do, but I have been on these meds for quite some time, and I figure if I was gonna have a seizure, I would have had one by now. I think that the area of most concern for people who take ad's and from time to time consume alcohol, would be your liver, as taking meds increases the load on your liver somewhat, so adding alcohol can't be good. I am a member of the moderation school myself. As long as you don't overdo it (besides, if you're drinking every day or something, I don't think that ad's will help your situation anyway ).
